Forums - I have too many terms to review each day! How do I lower that?

This is a common issue with anyone learning through SRS (which renshuu uses), so let me give you some tips!

Why does this happen?

Each term you learn in renshuu needs many questions answered over time to get its mastery level up high enough so that you only see it every few months. Unlike most other SRS systems, renshuu (especially for words and kanji) maintain multiple mastery levels for each term, which multiplies the question count. For example, the kanji > kana vector for vocabulary is quite different from meaning > Japanese, and so mastery on these are tracked separately.

So, the main cause of an increase in reviews each day is the size of your pool of terms, and that comes from new terms being studied for the first time. If you study a lot of new terms, you'll get flooded with reviews as they stack up with previously learned terms that are also coming up for review.

So, how to work with this? There's three main ways:

The best way, but no immediate change

Tap the ... next to your schedule on the dashboard, and go to Pace. Here, you can adjust how many and how often new terms are added to your schedule. Consider slowing it down, or even stopping the new terms (by setting it to Review mode) for the time being. This will not create an immediate drop in your review numbers, but will more naturally balance things out over time.

Tip: in the Pace popup, tap that checkbox at the top! That'll prioritize reviews over new terms, so you only get new stuff once your review stack is finished.

Adjusting study vectors

If you tap the settings link for your schedule, you'll see the "currently studying" section at the top (except for Grammar). Each item in this list is a mastery path for the term, and has its own set of questions. Because of that, removing one of these will cause the immediate removal of all those question types, and your reviews will drop. You can, of course, add it back in the future if you'd like. See if there are any study vectors that are not really working out for you.

Setting a daily limit

If you tap Settings again, then go to More Settings, you'll be able to uncheck the "study as much as I can" under "Daily study goal", and se a maximum number of reviews each day. This, too, will create an immediate drop in reviews. Please note, however, that this does not actually make the # of terms to review drop - it simply prioritizes the most important reviews and presents those for you. You'll still have those reviews hiding in the "background", and so while this is a good quick-fix, I recommend adjusting your new term flow (answer 1) as well for a long-term fix.
