Forums - How can I reduce the "ready to study" number?

I'm sure I'm missing something fairly simple, but I can't seem to figure this out. My "ready to study" vocabulary is larger than I'd like. This is not the same as the issue from last week where the number listed didn't match the actual number. This is different.

I'm accumulating "ready to study" items too fast for my liking. Over the weekend, I cleared out a backlog of 460+. Yesterday, I cleared out a new backlog of 300+. This morning, it's back up to 171 :-[. At this rate, if I wasn't able to study for a few days, I'd be hopelessly behind at 1000+ reviews, with no way to get through them all.

Is there any way to slow down the "ready to study" adds to a more manageable rate of 40-50 per day?

Since the ready to study numbers reflect the number of terms that have not been sufficiently studied, there is not a way to 'limit' the number of ready terms. If you jump into a large block of material, or come back to it after not studying for several months, it can be a bit overwhelming.

That being said, a couple of notes:

1. The number of entries will decrease over time as words get pushed higher and higher up the mastery level list.

2. If you are doing complex mastery (where you picked the question types in the schedule settings), I would recommend going and seeing how many question types you have selected. I never have more than 2 or 3 study vectors activated. If you have 6 (or 7, including listening), it is much more difficult to push terms up. Consider lowering this. The ready to study number may not immediately jump down, but it will decrease much faster than it is now.

3. When you find yourself overwhelmed, it can be helpful if you go into the materials linked to that schedule and remove some of them temporarily. For example, if you are doing a textbook that has 20 lessons, remove lessons 11-20. Focus on just the first half, getting the daily numbers down to a comfortable level. Once that is done, slowly re-add the removed lessons (maybe a couple lessons at a time).

You *will* bring the numbers to a reasonable level, I promise. I have a couple of schedules that each have 3000 or so words in them - while I started with the 'ready to study' numbers in the 1000-over range, one is down to about 20 terms a day, and the other is at 80 - I can clean these out in less than half an hour each day.

Ahhh, I think I understand now, thank you, マイコー!

By the same token, I imagine it will not decrease, and may even increase, if I continually add new terms.

Yes, I am doing complex, and I've checked ALL the vectors. No wonder my list is so big ;D! Now that I understand how it works, however, I don't think I'll uncheck any of them; one of the things I love about renshuu is how thoroughly it reviews a term. I see it six ways from Sunday, and I feel that really helps drive it home.

I see. That makes sense. I have several texts marked and only one of them is for class, but I worry that eliminating chapters out of any of them will eventually hurt in the long term more than it helps in the short term. I'll definitely keep this in mind, though, if I get totally swamped (1000+ reviews built up).

Whew, that's encouraging! Again, thank you so much for your thorough explanations. For right now, I think I'll keep things the way they are and do my best to keep on top of things. But I'm definitely going to keep your comments in mind, because if things get totally out of control, I know I have options.

I suppose I'd better get back to studying -- my list was back up to 155 this morning (and that was before I added more chapters from my class text :P).
