Hey guys,

I got COVID, froze my account, came back to renshuu briefly but then I realized I was so overwhelmed with the grammar sections.

I feel like I don't know enough words yet to tackle Starter Grammar. I'm not only learning a new grammar concept, but also trying to translate long sentences with many words I don't know yet.

Should I finish starter sentence and words until I dive into grammar?

What was your route?

I hope you're feeling better!

This would not have been added to your account if you chose certain answers when you first got started, but did you work through the Japanese Basics lessons? If not, how do you feel about basic Japanese sentence structure?

Also, there is no *absolute* need to do the grammar - you can always stick with the vocab/kanji for longer until you feel a bit refreshed, then step back into the grammar.

One more question: is it mainly the content that is difficult for you, or is it also the number of reviews waiting?

Hey マイコー, I absolutely shredded JP basics. I pretty much knew all of it.

I'm pretty good with the basic particles along with te form.

is it mainly the content that is difficult for you, or is it also the number of reviews waiting?
You're actually bringing up a point I hadn't considered. I have a very busy life style. I have horses, a full time job, and I volunteer at my town's fire department. I would say to do all my current reviews, it can take an hour a day to really immerse myself and complete the reviews honestly.
I think what may be happening is I'm in a bit of a rush, see a new concept I need to dedicate some brain power to, and get overwhelmed.

I see, and I can certainly empathize with the business of life.

As an aside of sorts, we are trying to write more Japanese Basics lessons to cover the same grammar that the Starter Grammar has. It'll take time, but we *are* working on it.

My personal experience was grammar at first felt really, really hard. There was so many words I didn't know and I felt like I was randomly moving blocks around, or selecting choices. It was a bit overwhelming at first.

I think going through that had a lot of value, because after struggling through it for a while, I started to get a better feel for what to look for. I realized that a lot of the time the actual meaning of the words themselves didn't matter, as long as you could figure out what that words job was (a time,a place,an object,a verb,etc.). My choices felt less random over time.

For me grammar is still the most challenging, but it seems to get easier over time. At first it's trial and error, but then it starts to feel more and more natural. More words start to feel like they place themselves.

I take it slow with grammar. Depending on what's being presented I may need to watch an Youtube video or two explaining the concept before returning to Renshuu to avoid too much trial and error. Since you are a busy person you could always try to reduce the number of new terms per day and slowly catch up with the reviews while making some steady progress.

I learned all the N5 and nearly all N4 Words and Kanjis before I started the N5 grammar. Its way more "fun" if you understand what the words in an example mean.
So imho, learn at least all the N5 words first, then do grammar.
