In Kanji decs their readings (Onyomi and Kunyomi) appear frequently in quizzes. I have heard this is inefficient (difficult) way to learn Kanji by memorizing all their readings😶‍🌫️.

It's best to learn kanji meanings and their respective vocabulary on the go (as they appear)🙂‍↕️.

I want these kind of Kanji decs kind of what TokiniAndy (YouTuber) recommends, If someone has made one please tell me how can I access it. 🥺🥺

I've personally found learning the readings (if even just half hazardly), is quite useful. However if you want to solely learn the meanings you can go to the settings of your kanji schedule, click more settings, scroll down 'till you see study vectors, then simply disable the kunyomi and onyomi reading vectors.

edit: If you want to learn kanji by memorizing its place in vocab, I would reccomend using an anki deck.

I like learning kanji only after I’ve learned a vocab word with the reading I’m trying to learn. I think Renshuu’s kanji helper schedules are great for this! I also enable the setting “no extra readings,” so Renshuu will only teach me a particular reading once I’ve already learned it in vocab. Maybe those two settings could help you with what you’re looking for!

another option is to make a kanji helper schedule for your vocab list. that way you learn the kanji for words you’ve already learned, with the specific readings that those words use.

I second the "no extra readings" setting. It's useful, in my opinion. It's good to learn and study the readings, but I prefer to learn them as-needed instead of all at once or in some arbitrary order.

Mrs. Diss explained it better and more concisely than I did, but that’s exactly what I meant to say and what I like to do! I could be wrong, but even with the helper schedule I believe you still have to enable “no extra readings” in order to just learn the ones in the words from your vocab list.

Sorry to hijack this question, but I can't seem to find the 'no extra readings' setting. Is it in the kanji deck settings?

First time post here, I decided to set it so i just have to memorize the kanji MEANING without the readings at all, what do you think about it? goal is recognition (for now)

The idea is to minimize burnout but still able to recognize a vocab, for example if i see 仕事, since i know the meaning but not the reading I see it as official, matter= work is しごと (i know the reading because of the vocab deck) is this good in the long run?

i am not sure how well this would work. the reason for only learning the kanji which appear in vocab one has already learned, out only learning the readings for each one has already learned vocab, is to avoid learning kanji out of context. learning things with context really improves how well you can retain things, otherwise you’re learning by rote.

so of you’re learning kanji on their own, with just their meaning, you’re still learning by rote. but if you’re learning kanji for words you already know, i think it’d be a loss not to learn the relevant readings at the same time…

and sometimes the meanings of words are way off from the meanings of their kanji, or words use kanji exclusively for their readings, so your approach would run into limits there.

it might still work for you, but i think actively learning the readings for words you know together with the kanji might be more productive, for only minimal extra effort

Sounds like you're describing RTK (Remembering the Kanji), which I personally don't like, but *is* a valid way to learn kanji. My understanding is that you quickly learn the meaning of all 常用漢字, and start learning vocab and kanji readings afterwards.

I think the idea is to be able to infer the meaning of things like 落ち葉, 雨水, 足跡, etc., and then learn the readings as you go. So next time you encounter them you'd know how to read them.

The biggest downside is that you can't really do this with words like 土竜, 寿司, 竜巻, 稽古, etc.

Kanji meaning is also just way less important as you get into N2-N1 kanji. At least in my opinion. At that point I like mnemonics specifically designed to help you remember the On'yomi, as well as paying attention to phonetic components (again with the goal of guessing On'yomi).

Of course how you learn is entirely up to you kao_thumb.png

I'd personally recommend learning kanji readings along with vocab, but that's just me. I usually use vocab to recall individual kanji readings, not the other way around. If the meaning of a kanji sticks, that's fine, but I don't actively try to memorise them.

Lots of people have learned this way. It works, but I think it's better to learn the readings properly, since it'll help you learn vocab you haven't seen before.

I'm not sure about you, but I can usually blast through all my kanji reviews in 1-5 minutes with both reading and meaning enabled. Bad days take longer. But, kanji are by far the fastest to study on Renshuu. I would look elsewhere for ways to save time.
