I'm using Gboard on my Android phone (specifically, a Pixel 6a), and I've been experiencing an issue lately where, when I hold down the space bar to bring up the Change Keyboard popup, it immediately disappears.
It used to work fine. And it seems like this is only happening on my Renshuu app. I cleared the cache on Gboard as well as Renshuu, but neither seemed to help.
Looking around online, it seems like this sometimes happens with Gboard when the input field is expecting a certain kind of input. Though, this even happens in the dictionary where one would expect to type in both English and Japanese.
To be thorough, I opened Renshuu in my browser (Firefox) on my phone, and the Change Keyboard popup worked just fine in the dictionary.
That is pretty strange! Cannot say I've ever heard of it happening.
Most input fields on renshuu do not have any "expected" input in the sense that the keyboard could detect it - the only real ones I can think of are ones that expect a number.
Have you been able to get a sense of "problem does not exist for inputs A, B, and C, but do for D, E."?
Sorry for the late reply!
I also figured the same thing about input stuff. Even if it was that, it seemed so odd that it would've changed on Renshuu's end.
After doing some more looking around, I'm wondering if it might be Renshuu aggressively pulling/requesting focus back to the text field.
I don't know what Renshuu operates on, but I found a recent, similar-seeming Chromium-based issue. It seemed relevant because, as someone mentioned there, they also had that issue with Obsidian, and I am *also* having this issue with the Obsidian app. But that also makes it seem like a might be a wider, underlying issue.
It's more of an annoyance than something pressing anyway.
And, if anyone else reads this and is facing the same issue, I've been working around it by tapping on the 🌐 icon on the lower right side *beneath* the keyboard to switch languages. And, oddly enough, long-pressing that icon brings up a Keyboard menu pop-up (though, a different one) that *doesn't* disappear.
Weird stuff. 😂
As far as I can tell, this is *any* text field on Renshuu. I notice it in the dictionary. I notice it when doing a Question Corner. In fact, it does it as I'm replying here. So, if I wanted to switch my keyboard to Japanese by long-pressing the space bar, the "Change keyboard" menu pops up for a split-second, disappears, and my keyboard disappears too.
Alright. I took a screen recording, then I uploaded it to Google Drive.
I hope that helps!
Thanks. I'm going back to my original suspicion - it is some issue with the keyboard, or perhaps android itself. renshuu uses a webview (basically, a web browser inside of the app) for most of the layout, and that makes it "different" from text fields in the vast majority of apps in the play store.
So it has happened before that an issue popped up with a new release of the keyboard, or webview (webview, in particular, is updated silently), and can take some time for it to get fixed.
This is popping up with other users as well, so I'm marking this as a central thread for this issue until it gets resolved.
Users with GBoard on their android device
Versions: unknown
Time period: it seems like it has come up in the last two weeks
Both Gboard and Webview are Google developed apps. Webview is basically a "web browser inside of the app", which is what lets me load up the renshuu webpage inside of the app without developing a full, standalone app.
Both of these get updated all the time, and often "silently" in the sense that the user doesn't see the updates happening.
In the past, renshuu has had issues where one (webview, mainly) had a bug, and it got fixed later on. However, that usually only happens if it gets reported!
1. Report your versions of GBoard, Webview, and whether or not you have the issue.
(For most Android versions, you'll want to pull down the top menu, go to Settings, then Apps. Find each of these apps (webview is usually called "Android system webview"), then use that page to get the version
2. If you are adventurous (and would like some free renshuu pro - I will happily give it out to those who can answer this question), try using those 3rd party apk sites to revert to older versions of either or both, and see if you can say "it worked until version xx.xx, put stops working at xx.yy
I will update this post as we get more info!
