Hi all, new to renshuu and learning Japanese. Doing ok at learning the hiragana but really struggling with remembering new words. Tried to do some sort of word association type stuff but finding the sounds of the language don't lend themselves to this well. Is it a case of just keep on with the spaced repetition? Currently adding just 2 new words and still finding ones I have learned hard to remember. Any ideas gratefully received or just let me know if this is pretty much the way it goes and just keep at it till it sticks. Thanks, Ed. (ChickenPop on here - long story :))
We learn everything by repeatition. Doing it again and again until we can do it. Some people prefer visual memory, some auditory memory, some handwriting memory, etc. But it is all about repeatition.
Is this your first foreign language to learn or is it just Japanese problem?

Thanks - first serious attempt to learn a language. Will just keep on with the repetition then. Hopefully it will start to stick.
The sounds of the language aren’t working because they aren’t familiar to you yet. Listen to as much Japanese as you can. You don’t need to understand what is being said. You just want to develop a feel for the language.

If it's first - it's gonna be harder in the beginning. But you'll get there :)
I assume you are Eglish-speaking person, so it might be good idea to listen more (like @ポールおじちゃん wrote above). Japanese has different sounding than English. Each word in Renshuu has sentences connected to it. Maybe try listening to them and catch word (one you are learning) in the sentences?
It gets easier the more you review, so keep at it. That said for words to truly stick, you need to use them. Read, write, speak, and listen. It might be a little too early for some of that yet, but when you're ready, using the language will speed things up a lot.
For now, I suggest checking out shiritori in the games tab. It'll force you to recall your vocab words. I suggest shiritori cat because you're on a time limit to answer.
You can also try out nihongo jikan comprehensible input on YouTube and see if you can understand the complete beginner videos for some listening practice.
