hii 😸 thinking about studying for the jlpt N5 test, but I wanna know, has anyone done it, and do you think, In your opinion, was it worth it? I hope to work towards n4 aswell !! How was your experience?? Thankss
Echoing the above response. Been studying for the N5 and as far as a credential goes it's mostly useless and isn't really worth anything.
HOWEVER, it's not too expensive to take and it represents to me a stepping block and goal to pursue. Personally, I plan on trying to pass one a year: N5 this year, N4 next, N3 the year after, at which time N2 study will probably take longer.

Oh thank you so much for your reply! I have a question tho, isn't some kind of Japanese proficiency level required to live or work in Japan?? If so, is N5 less credentially useful than, say, N2 level, or is it just the JLPT in general that isn't as useful?? Are there other proficiency tests that might have a greater credential value if someday I wanted to live or work in Japan ?
I believe you need JLPT N2, or CEFR B2 for language-dependant work. They made some changes earlier this year. I think work visa related, if I'm not mistaken.
Have you heard about the proposed income requirements for foreigners seeking residency?
Apparently they want foreigners to make more than the average Japenese household for residency. I think 5.7m Yen or like 33k USD
Yeah, it's the new draft requirements for permanent residency. I think they also want to require language proficiency (not sure what level). That part seems fine, as long as the requirement isn't astronomical. PR is generally something you apply for after you've already been living there for a few years.
I'm curious to hear if the proposal will pass. Obviously I'm a foreigner, but I think the language proposal is reasonable, but to require that you make more than the average Japenese household is a bit much. Per my understanding of income in Japan, 33k USD is solidly middle class income which seems like a lot. That's like requiring those seeking US residency to make at least 60-70k to stay, which is crazy to me.
