I know very well that a lot of people have already answered this question. But I feel the need to get more options to pick from. From Google we see that he/she/they are a ball of magical fluff or mochi. But honestly im set on this topic while learning Japanese even though I just started lol. Also with the gender in a lot of the comics Kao has been called a girl in the english translations Im not the best on japanese yet (Having no experience) but we have also seen kao in dresses before in the comics. I just wanted yalls opinions in this matter because im curious and can't find a good thread.
Which comics? The manga doesn't seem to use any pronouns. As far as I know, Kao-chan is just... Kao-chan :D
Kao-chan is called she more often than not I believe. I'm not sure where though, but I think it has been mentioned like once or twice in the manga, and maybe in some old announcements...
I mean, I can set ya straight - while it's possible we've used "she" in the past in various places, Kao-chan is definitely genderless, as it is the only one of its kind!

And see there, our new Kao city/village (or essentially a forest if you want to:)
(I don't know what to do with the spelling though, it could either be カオ森 or 顔森)
