It would be kinda nice to have a fifth difficulty mode for Kanji writing where I just draw what I think the character should be, with zero stroke hints, then I click a button when I'm done and see how close I got, then decide whether I was right or not. A study option like that would mirror actually writing a Kanji on a piece of paper far better than any mode with hints, and would be a good final progression step in Kanji study.
I appreciate the suggestion, and I'll keep that in mind! It would be a significant departure from how the system is programmed, so I suspect that it would be more work than one might expect for such a feature. If I get around to making improvements to the writing system, though, I'll consider it.

Fair enough! I just think it's good practice to have zero feedback as you're writing, gotta have full confidence in what you're doing from beginning to end.
On a smartphone you can reach such functionality by installing a handwriting Japanese input method.
So, all which would be needed would be a mode to enter kanji "as text" and let the input device do the work (it won't be a even level for everybody, as it will work only for people with touchscreen+handwriting input devices, but it works quite well for me - I don't know if I do have a "stroke count hint" in such questions, I'll try to look next time)
I would say that one thing that gets in the way is how my writing system is built. It is not overly complex - it is, in the end, overlapping your strokes with the strokes of the expected character, and doing a "did they get enough % of the correct strokes, without getting too much outside of the strokes". There are a few tricks in there to help things (for example, if the entire drawing is perfect, but off centered a bit, it usually accepts it), but it does not have a sense of individual strokes (as strokes, and not just a collection of pixels), stroke shape, etc.
Because of that, the more "blind" you get, the jankier the system feels, as it cannot say (for example) - "oh, the character is legible, but strokes 2 and 4 are spaced a bit far apart, and everything is 15% smaller than I would have expected".
I also really would like this feature. I need to be able to write them off my memory in quick succession and even with the feature where the guidestrokes fade out, waiting 5 seconds is too long to be able to write when you have to go through hundreds.
I'm currently using Skritter for this feature but would love to move all my learning unto renshuu instead of it being spread out in different apps.
On a similar topic... is there a way to disable stroke order hints? I could just mark myself as incorrect if I go to draw a stroke in the incorrect order, but I feel like hiding the hints would be a better way to catch myself.
