Hello,
I'm sorry, I know that this has been asked before but I cannot find a solution that works for me. When doing a quiz for the Kanji helper schedule, I am being tested on readings that I haven't had any vocabulary for yet, which I have found to be discouraging.
I have two main (relevant) schedules on my dashboard, "Japanese Basics" and "WaniKani Levels 1-10".
For "Japanese Basics" I have added a word helper schedule, "Words for Japanese Basics" and for that one, I have created a Kanji helper schedule, "Kanji for Words for Japanese Basics".
For "WaniKani Levels 1-10", I was able to directly add a Kanji helper schedule, "Kanji for WaniKani Levels 1-10".
The following settings are identical for both Kanji Helper schedules.
In my Kanji settings, for "Kanji readings to include in your quizzes" I have it set to "No extra readings".
Also in Kanji settings, for "Filter words" I have it set to "Known?"
Under the Schedule settings:
Both, "Don't limit new terms on this schedule." and "Don't limit new terms on kanji schedules." are enabled.
"Mix in terms for review" is set to none.
"When a word is studied, which kanji in that word should be added?" is set to "Up to Advanced (N1)".
I have tried altering settings, resetting the schedule and deleting, then adding back the Kanji helper schedule between setting changes in an attempt to ensure that no prior learning is carried over. But no matter what I change, the issue persists.
I have multiple examples to include with screenshots.
Example #1:
- Kanji with the above readings: なまり
- I have learned the えん reading, from 鉛筆, no others.

Example #2:
- Kanji with the Onyomi reading: アイ
- I have only learned the 可愛い reading as vocab context for 愛

Example #3:
- Kanji with the Kunyomi reading: や.める
- I have only learned the 辞書 reading as vocab context for 辞.

I can provide more examples if requested. The behavior is consistent in both Kanji helper schedules.
I have replicated the problem both with the filter set to known, as well as to other JLPT levels.
I have tried turning it from no extra readings, to a less strict setting, and back again.
I have tried resetting the schedule, deleting the schedule, and adding it back.
The behavior persists across all attempts and changes I have made.
My preference would be to only be tested on readings that I was exposed to via vocabulary in the root schedule, or the "Words for" schedule. If anyone can help me I'd be deeply appreciative. If you need more information about settings, please let me know what to provide and I'll do my best to provide.
Thanks everyone!
Based on the age of your account, let me ask you this: did you ever have the kanji reading filter set to something other than "no extra readings" ?
If so, that might account for it - the "no extra readings" will not wipe out readings previously acquired via other means (just as an example, say you had it set to renshuu recommend, studied a kanji, got the readings renshuu had in there: that would save those readings into your account.)
The kanji filters are a "this is what we'll do from now on" kind of thing - they are not subtractive in the sense that they'll wipe out things previously studied. However, if you had a previous setting, then had a kanji you had not studied, then it would not have any saved readings, and it would essentially follow the "no extra readings" setting when you did get around to studying it.
