Ok Heya!! I'm trying to start a new gardening project and um im getting kind of worried it's not growing... lemme explain what im growing in the first place, strawberries. My friend said she was growing blueberries from her blueberry and I thought the idea was cool so I wanted to do the same except with strawberries. So I plucked some seeds off of a berry and just planted it in a medium pot (I was planning on transferring it to a bigger one) and it's been 5 days since. Now I'm no dummy (well maybe a little) but I know that strawberries take a while to grow but I was expecting at least a Lil sprout! Did I do something wrong or am I just unpaitent? If so how do I do it right?! Thank you!! kao_yeah.pngkao_think.png

I'm not really sure myself, but I think that's a really cool idea so can I maybe, steal the idea?

I don't think you're supposed to pluck them off the plant. If you do then you might need to dry them. I actually have no idea about this so watching YouTube videos should help. And maybe tomato might be easier to grow if you would like to try!

If it's store bought, it's probably not going to grow kao_worry.png. Also, I'm pretty sure strawberries can take up to about 3 weeks to sprout. If it's not a store bought strawberry then make sure to keep it in full sun and water regularly, and it will likely start to grow kao_great.png

thank you!! It was just a regular grocery strawberry so maybe it won't work but I'll try another batch of seeds but actually prepare them before I put them in the soil!! kao_yeah.png

I've grown strawberries before so I've got a little advice for you once you've got a healthy plant growing: beware the birds kao_don.png Almost every strawberry I grew got nommed on before it was ready kao_cry.png

Also, don't fuss too much about trying to keep the plant happy. The one we had actually grew better and produced more strawberries once we had abandoned it kao_shiawase.png

Here's some of the ones that actually survived kao_hug.png

You can buy netting to keep the birds away, but squirrels love strawberries too. You could cover them with chicken wire, but make sure to wear heavy gloves to protect your hands.

at first I thought you were talking about your renshuu garden :D the blueberries got me though.

I have plenty of strawberries on my balcony, they all origjnated from a few plants that probably don't exist anymore.

I'ld think it is pretty difficult to grow them from seeds because the conditions need to be just right. But if you have a plant or know someone who does, you can just take the "runners", they look a little bit like the first pic posted by Inkheart. The will make new roots and voila, you'll have a new plant.

Never had any problems with birds eating my berries :)

Ok, so first of there is one thing and it is that yes u r being impatient lol 😂
Strawberries don’t sprout in 5 days. They take 2-4 weeks to grow or even 8 weeks ! Oof, what a long time.
Also you need to be careful because for the strawberry seeds to break dormancy they need what is called stratification.
"Stratification really only affects the germination rate, not what the plant does after"
Strawberries drop in late summer then sit through winter and sprout in spring. So, the seeds are expecting cold first.

Also there is one more important thing I would like to warn you about. If you have taken strawberries from the mart and then the seeds from the strawberries, they are likely to be hybrid. So, the seed may grow, but not like the original or put in other words grow weakly.

Basically you skipped the winter part, and underestimated how slow seeds are. 5 days are nothing for plants. 🥹😅

As it's been said, seeds off store-bought fruit aren't very likely to be viable, and strawberry plants aren't big on growing out of seeds but out of rhizomes. BUT if you want to have fun with them, try choosing the ripest strawberry and keeping it somewhere until it starts to go bad before you remove the seeds for planting. Seeds continue to mature while on the fruit. (Technically, those tiny grainy things are actually an achene, a "real" fruit so to say, and the seed is inside them, not that it matters for this purpose.)

If you want to enjoy watching something grow, things like onion, wheat, carrots or avocadoes (don't put those in the ground!) are easy and fun too.

LE: Had luck with tangerine seeds a couple of times. A friend's managed to grow a mini-tree, mine never grew that much.

yeah I've heard that tangerines are also fun to grow but I don't have one right now, i'm not too upset that it might not grow because I just want to do it for fun!! I'll try others fruits to and see if they have any luck kao_yeah.png

Well, there were several times we actually caught a bird in the act, but so many of the strawberries were ruined that I'm sure plenty of other animals got in on it too kao_dejected.png

Don't rule out snails, they leave exactly the kind of snaking ruts with no clear puncture hole that I see in the photo. They love sweet things, not that they won't nom other stuff. They ate my ginger! It had just sprouted, too.

Growing strawberries from seeds is possible, because I know my dad's cousin did it, but it's difficult and you definitely would need seeds meant for growing. It might be easier to grow a lemon, before my great grandma died she could barely walk so one day instead of throwing her lemon seed in the trash she threw it in the pot growing and Aloe plant, and it happened to grow a tree and after she died my grandma took it and it's like multiple feet tall now.

aw that's such a sweet story!! Your grandma seemed like a very gentle person, may she rest in peace

Update: So I will still water the original batch of seeds i've planted but I did just plant 2 more batches so now I have 3 pots to look after. I did use a different method for the latest one ( cut off thin slices method ) and have sealed them in the pot/jar. This time I will try and be more patient with them. If this doesn't work then um... I guess I'll just have to find another fruit to plant!! kao_yeah.png

btw, thank you all for all your responses, I didn't think I'd get so many of them!! (you guys are so helpful thank you!!kao_heart.png)
