Not quite sure how to word this... sorry guys
a - why is meter/メートル related to rice?

b - how is it kun'yomi [i get that on'yomi is from china IIRC, but i'm just confused]

Apparently it's not a "true" kun'yomi, but a shorthand for meter in some contexts - 100 for 100 metres

I'll do a bit more research to make sure this is accurate, and edit this as needed. At any rate, I don't think it's very important to know :D


Edit: Looks like is the regular word (or character?) for meter in Chinese, just didn't really get widely adopted in Japanese.

Ok, so during the Meiji era with the introduction of the metric system they adopted 米突 to represent meter. So in a way it "devolved" → メートル.

It’s not on’yomi, so it gets labeled kun’yomi by default, even though it isn’t really that either.

Another character with the same property is (kilogram). Interestingly, in Chinese it means kW, not kg.

ah, thanks! so it's just in a small group of outliers that aren't frequent enough to have their own category. weird, i love it!
