Romaji/romanization (sometimes called English pronunciation) is where you write out a Japanese word using ABCs. For example, kawaii for かわいい, or nihon for にほん.

While it's a point of pride for me to have renshuu be as un-opinionated as possible when it come to learning styles, we do not have any settings for displaying materials on renshuu in romaji, outside of learning the hiragana/katakana alphabets.

TLDR: romaji is a crutch that slows down your learning because it lets a learner avoid hiragana/katakana, two *absolutely essential* alphabets needed for Japanese, from the basic levels all the way to fluency.

1. Romaji is, at best, an approximation of Japanese sounds, and is going to make the comprehension of some sounds hard(er) to pick up.

2. Except for the most (I feel) extreme of edge cases, there is *no* way to get through learning Japanese without using the kana alphabets. Even if you think "I am only going to use it to talk/listen", I would still say "you don't know that, and the relatively minuscule amount of time you'll use to learn the two alphabets is nothing in order to prepare you for if you decide that you want to read/write later on."

3. Hiragana and Katakana are not that hard. They are the first "whoa, what is this" wall one usually runs into when learning Japanese, but in my humble opinion, if learning these two alphabets is too much, then Japanese as a whole might not be a good fit for you. However, I believe that everyone can learn them!

I've been studying (actively or passively) Japanese for 20+ years, and I've been a language teacher (English formally, Japanese informally) for most of those. I feel so strongly that the kana alphabets should be learned first and learned well that it's one of the few learning choices that are decided for you by the renshuu platform.

For others who have mastered the alphabets, I can say that writing, the community mnemonics, and games such as Quick Draw have helped them the most :)
