No, don’t tell me to simply hide them. I know they are there. Those infernal OCD triggers do nothing but make me horribly anxious. I find myself straight-up cheating when doing grammar quizes because I can’t stand the thought of losing my streak again. And it never ends. The last milestone I reached was for the next reward to be at 1,500 questions—that is effectively impossible and downright insulting: a 1,500 coin reward for 1,500 times you double-check every answer to make sure you don’t mess it up because you didn’t notice where that damnable star was, or you mistapped something by mistake. This is not learning, this is bomb defusing. And I’m not even sure 1,500 is the last milestone—I can’t describe how incredibly frustrating it was to hit each milestone up to that point, only to realize that somehow the returns are going to diminish even further and that damned quest won’t end already!!
This loathsome feature needs to be removed yesterday.
(Written after reaching a streak of over 1,400 questions, with a lot of expletives excised purely for ToS reasons.)
I posted this here to see if those lthousands actually like it.
Personally I ignore those correct answer streak challenges because, for me, it's too stressful, like unpleasantly どきどき, especially when I get very close to the target. (Probably because my Japanese at any level is still too imperfect.) I can see they would be a good motivator for certain people though. It might depend on your personality.
I do not do much in the way of user analytics, so I do not have percentages, but based on all of the feedback I get through the forms, emails, DMs, etc., my educated guess would be that those that do not like it feel just fine unchecking it from the list of available quests and then forgetting about it/them.
@NLLumi, I get you. I'm incapable of long streaks, and when I get one that's longer than usual I find myself stressing about breaking it, so it's almost a relief when I do.
Sorry if I'm getting all philosophical here, but this is very important for me, because maybe I used to be a little like you, and learned the hard way: Achievements, milestones, quests, whatever – they're just there. It's up to you if they matter to you or not. If you feel you need to get them just because you know they're there, you need to stop. I'm sorry, but I mean it. There's no end to that hole. Just because they're there, it doesn't mean you've failed if you haven't got them. Even when you do, there will always be another and another.
So, if you feel you can't ignore them and constantly check the achievements page: that's not where your progress is, and I guess you know already. "Don't tell me to hide them" is basically "I know they don't matter, but for some reason I feel as if they do and I'm not willing to adjust my way of thinking, it's reality that should adjust". I bet you already know that Renshuu, just like life in general, is about learning and growing, not about collecting achievements. They don't do anything, they're just there for people who enjoy seeing them. So it's OK to write an angry post and blow off steam, but get back to what actually matters.
No one is making you, telling you, or threatening you. YOU are. You can stop doing that to yourself.
I haven't unchecked them or anything, but I do think they are poorly designed. Keeping a 1.5k streak is really difficult and counterproductive. The best way to do it is to either "cheat" or stop learning new things until you get it. Even then it's easy to mess up and wipe your whole progress. They are designed in a way that effectively punishes you for being productive.
If you hate the 1.5k streak, I have bad news for you... there's a 9,999 streak (I think that's the last one). Assuming every streak quest has the same progression, of course.
Point is - they are unreasonable, not worth the effort, and pursuing 'em makes your learning experience worse. The moment I realised that, I just started ignoring them. They don't bother me at all, but I understand not everyone can "just ignore them".
The quests aren't balanced well at all, and that's OK. Renshuu is a learning platform, not a game.
PS: And yes, the 9,999 streak does only give you 1,500 coins.
Maybe what’s needed is a way to “restore” a broken streak. Not sure what that would look like, but it would take some of the stress away.
Although I do not have the time to do so (implement changes) in the near future, I would (as I mentioned in the other thread) be interested in a discussion on adjusting the streak mechanics (freeze, etc.), but the feature itself is going away. renshuu is fundamentally all about being as un-opinionated as possible - we try not to tell you that "this is the right way to learn, the other way is *wrong*", and that's why we both a)have this feature and b)make it extremely easy to hide this so that you will never see it outside of the "customize your quests" settings panel.
I have had many users over the years ask for a streaks feature (having not yet found the one that is present in renshuu), and I have no intention of saying "well, yes, we did have that. Many didn't like it, so we had a way to easily disable/hide it. However, some people felt that it should not be available to anyone.", I will always choose (when I am capable of implementing it) the "choose what works best for you" path.
Frankly, I've followed this belief to the extent that I have probably lost a significant amount of potential income because the amount of customization and personalization in renshuu turns off a significant number of users due to the complexity. I have no regrets, though, because I want to allow as much freedom to learners on renshuu as possible.
You can continue to rant against this point, but I will not be continuing with the conversation. If you (or anyone else) would like to discuss potential changes to the system to make it more useful to more people, then yes, I'd love to hear about it.

To me, the streaks are just there, and if I happen to get them? Cool. If not, that's ok too. I like the streaks as they are a nice bonus to have, but not necessary in order to get better at Japanese. I always get a little motivation boost whenever I happen to hit one.
I feel like asking to remove them is not a productive solution, and the unfiltered tone of your rant is understandably not going to convince anyone to make any changes to it.
If anything, I'd say a fix streak option would be nice to have, but I believe this is a very trivial thing to worry about, especially since there are tools on here you can use to hide them if they bother you.
🤦🏻
That's exactly it. (And one of my favourite things about Renshuu). It's fine if you get the quests, it's fine if you don't. Which is also why the coin bonus doesn't scale up, I'd guess.
A supermarket has five different fruit on special offer, gaining you bonus points on their fidelity card – is it telling me to get them all, or I'm a bad customer? My local pool has a subscription for Mo-Fri and another for the weekend, each with their bonuses – is it bullying me into buying both, or I'm a lazy bum?
Here's a good one: a book is describing a team of outstanding people – a female doctor, a male educator, a little girl and a mute truck driver – saving the world. Is it telling me, in order to be a valuable person, I should be a male, a female, an adult, a child, able and unable to speak, as well as a professional in all three fields? Variety is there precisely so everyone feels included and picks what works for them, or none of the above. The mean, bullying voice saying "if you don't tick all of these, you haven't done enough" is in our heads, not out here. And it's wrong. So I tell it to shut up and I go out there and enjoy being allowed to make mistakes.

Thanks a lot Michael. Also FWIW I ended up on Renshuu after reading that I would be able to create my own lessons here. (In the beginning, in my case at least, the customisation/personalization aspect was the attraction.)

For the record, having all those customization options is one of the best things about this platforms. I wish more platforms learned from you.
