3neko: please do not adjust the mastery levels - that removes the evidence, making it much harder for me to fix it. Also, if you still have any like that, please give me specific examples.

Renshuu lists were already updated or replaced in the past. What‘s the benefit of this?

i can't speak for others, but i merged my renshuu n5, n4, and n3 schedules into one schedule which i believe makes them count as a "user made" schedule. i had ~40 duplicates in it. maybe for other people studying and as separate terms with separate mastery levels is important, but for me it is not as they are obviously the same word. so i would like to have to option to remove those types of duplicates from my schedule.

Well, your schedule _is_ „user made“ then. There is no way to find out your intention just from your data.

But you can fix that yourself quite easily. You can, instead of merging schedules, create a list where you merge the renshuu lists. You can remove or hide annoying terms that you consider duplicates. Make a schedule from that.

And you can do that anytime, since your progress (as well as my deleted progress) is attached to the terms, not the lists and not the schedules. You wouldn‘t loose anything and still have the desired behaviour.

And if that‘s too much, set the mastery of one version to 100%. It will be quizzed once a year then.

That‘s possible already.

You could also wait for Mike to recreate or fix the N5/N4/… renshuu lists. You could delete your schedule and recreate it from the fixed renshuu lists. You don‘t loose anything in that.

Also, not all cases of removed data are similar to your example. There are words merged, and kanji versions deleted, that shouldn‘t (う/う, う/う,…).

So while I understand, that this may seem convenient for you. You can solve your problem already. There are multiple solutions without interfering with other users‘ data.

How long does it take for my schedules to be updated? Because I just merged my words and they seem to only be partly updated, e.g. like this:

before merging:

り not in any schedule --- り 87% mastery in schedule "words for pre-intermediate"

after merging:

り 87% mastery, but still not in any schedule --- り unknown mastery, but still in previous schedule

So the mastery transfer seems to work, but shouldn't the alternative be removed from the schedule and the main version be added if I had only studied one of them? Does that just take longer than refreshing the page?

Edit: for e.g. いつく / くthis worked. いつく got both the mastery and schedule from く.

I also had す and す, but unchecked to keep them both and expected nothing to change. But す's mastery went from 50 to 63% and す got removed from the schedule.

And with / and い / い I did the same, unchecked the box to keep both versions. Their masteries didn't change, but and い were removed from their schedules.

So the unchecking didn't really work as expected. Should I just manually add them to my schedules again?

Eepy: it's the weekend, so I cannot really look into it, but are those "extra" terms still in there, or did they get cleaned out?

No worries and thanks for looking into this, I hope you had a nice weekend! I double checked the N3 vocab schedule again, and it seems like all the extra words are no longer part of that schedule. I also checked whether the N4 vocab schedule had any duplicates, but wasn't able to pinpoint any so far other than 1 word being stuck in my reviews.

Thanks everyone for the updates and reports! It's the start of a new week, so I'm ready to dive into this:

3neko: this is a test feature that is not yet stable. I respectfully ask with issues that are coming up (such as the う/う issue), you give me the benefit of the doubt that when I say that I only want to fix the renshuu-made materials, that this is indeed my intention. I have always bent over backwards to accommodate user-choice and maintaining backwards compatibility (both with features, settings, and content) across literally 20 years of development, so the tone used in your messaging that suggests otherwise is not necessary.

Edit: I have put off this merge for *years* because I wanted to make sure I was able to develop a tool that, when finished, maintained integrity across all the variations of user data (which for a "freeform" platform like renshuu, is extremely difficult). A lot of users will (maybe in a later iteration of this tool) want merging done across all materials, so I'm trying to, from the get-go, make something that can consider and respond to all user needs.

While I have indeed made fixes/changes to the N5/N4 lists in the past, I am far from perfect (and so I sometimes miss things), and this tool covers ALL the renshuu-made lists, which expands far beyond the current jlpt lists, but the older ones, kanji kentei lists, dozens of textbooks, etc.

I should have some more news/updates later today regarding the first issue you brought up.

ぶどう: your schedule is definitely considered to be user-made - it's a bit of a "ship of theseus" issue, and so I have to draw the line at point and say what is renshuu-made, and what is user-made. For this, that line is drawn at the "added by renshuu or added by the user on the Manage your Schedules page, and *not* merged with anything else."

トンヤ - the tool is instant, so it sounds like a small bug. You mentioned り - which schedule is it currently in for you?

I took the tool down for a day (two at the most) so I can work on some changes. You can still view it, just not hit the button at the bottom.

I believe this new layout will address all the non-bug issues that have been brought up.

1. The only schedules that are forcibly changed (because they will otherwise not line up when the renshuu materials are updated) are the renshuu-made schedules. (Of course, once this takes place, you can still re-add any alternate forms to your renshuu schedules, but I doubt that will be a common action, or even a rare one.)

2. It now shows all possible merges in terms that are in your account, but are not from a renshuu schedule (see the ひにち at the bottom of the screenshot). These will, by default, not be merged, as renshuu does not have enough information to know the user's intent. Checking the box next to the main term will merge it, though, and adjust all schedules that contain it.

To everyone who has had concerns with how it's worked so far, please let me know what you think about this!

り is in the renshuu-made "Words for pre-intermediate", but I had merged some community words lists into it, so I guess, the problem is that it's now also considered a user-made schedule.

In my N3 word schedule I have added single words, is this also not a renshuu-made schedule anymore?

If so, I can't really test the new tool. Sorry for my misunderstanding.

Thanks for the tool and the help anyway.

That is correct, but the new version of the tool should work for you once it's ready :)

Thanks a lot, Michael!

I‘m happy to hear that! My choice of learning material is the main reason I use renshuu for hours every day. Since I have found reshuu, my learning is heavily based on it. Seeing an idea of deleting terms in my lists floating around, got me nervous.

You created a wonderful, flexible, individual, the-only-app-for-advanced-learners tool, that I love a lot!

The changes made in the merge overview page now communicate better what is going to happen, I believe.

For me, the overview is showing what I would expect (and hoped for): No terms on renshuu schedules, since I don‘t have any. Quite a few terms in my schedules, that I can choose to not merge - no change in mastery, no removal of terms.

Thanks again.

You can study multiple ways if you want - that has always been present and will not be removed. This is just for unifying the entries in renshuu-based lists to a single version, and optionally (that's what the page is for) merging the alternate versions into the main one so your account is cleaned up. All alternate versions will show up in the dictionary, and you can add them (or do anything else) like before. :)

I guess what I meant by "study different versions" is to have the alternate spellings only quiz the spelling part. And to reflect on the "main" vocabulary word -- a lot of my duplicates are from when I got a word that it thought I didn't know in a sentence because it was an alternate spelling, so I added it in (despite the tedium of re-studying something I already knew) so that it wouldn't flag it as unknown. Or where I ran into a non-headword version and felt like I needed to add both, to get the + to be green. (Especially with the words where the two versions are hiragana vs katakana, because when I'm typing them in in quizzes I'm typing romaji either way, so it's really a lot of duplication.)

(It'd also be great to merge all the suru-verbs that have two entries, one for the noun (with a "this can be a suru-verb" note, and one for the form with the +suru, because I have, again, a lot of those, because I add them both to get them to show up as "known" in Renshuu, but really I'd just like having studying one update them both.)

I know these are non-trivial ideas, I'm just throwing them out there.

I think for now, I am not going to run the merge -- I'd be happy to merge in all the ones where it's just vs お/ご, but I want it quizzing me on all the forms of はかる, for example, and it's not telling me which schedule the words are in; I know I already mostly pruned duplicates out of my typing schedule by putting them in my non-typing schedule (since it's faster to just clickclickclick through), but I don't know which one is going to get kept. (None of my schedules are "official" ones.)

With regards to the する thing, it is something I'd like to link in *some* way, but as you pointed out, it's not a one-and-done change.

For the "which one it's in" - that's an interesting point. I'm trying to keep the page as simple as possible because it's going to affect a lot of users, and I do not want to overload people with info, but I do see how that info could help! Will keep it in mind.

I just used the new merge tool again and got the same bug again, this time showing up in a user-made schedule I made (called word box).

a8a6502d564e474eaf1787a4.jpg1ff90d866a33fdeac66bfb49.jpg

The tool deleted my mastery on these words and marked them as unlearned. I also deselected some words on the merge page and visually it seemed like it merged everything anyway (though I can't confirm it actually happened, I just didn't see those words as being selectable in the merge list afterwards anymore).

It seems like the unlearned terms are the duplicates that were supposed to be removed, so perhaps this might simply be expected behavior? Just wanted to report on it anyway in case it helps!

When you ran the tool, did those terms appear in the "renshuu-made" section, or the bottom section?

I checked the merge page again, and while I don't fully remember which column they were in (they were definitely all in one though, not in separate ones), it currently looks like this now. So in retrospect, it seems like it did respect the exceptions I selected, as I wanted terms like and いまさら to be excluded

Hello,

Looks like merging some data broke something in my vocab schedule. Now there's one ghost word "to be reviewed now", but if I check the words to be reviewed, none can be found.

da14c4277a76f8ab0fb01a60.jpg598f15af8c48aa4b58277430.jpg

When I press study, it gets stuck on the loading animation and doesn't do anything (I tried waiting for 2-3 minutes for a good measure).

Could you please look into the issue and try to unfreeze the schedule in question?

---

In addition, I've noticed a few kanji behaving weirdly after the merge. Namely, , , and (all of them were present in some words affected by the merge, such as り). Now, during vocab reviews, they show up as unknown, despite being on my kanji schedule and having been studied. For now I've removed and re-added them to the schedule and will check if it has resolved in the coming days.

Used the tool and it worked pretty well for me. I've got renshuu's n5 and n4 schedules.

My only significant hiccup: おじいさん and おかわり had (probably 100%) kanji -> meaning for their forms with kanji, and 0% kana -> meaning. So, their new forms don't have any credit for kana -> meaning.

I think I'll just set the mastery of those two myself, despite the little warning about leaderboards.
