Not like I'm a published author, but literature is my bread and butter, so here's a suggestion, which may or may not work for you: you don't absolutely have to start writing a book at the beginning.

If you have your characters fairly well-defined and have some things you want them to do, start by writing those scenes and then their world will be more clear in your head and you might have an easier time writing a beginning to invite your readers into it.

If you have your characters and a general idea of what you want them to go through, sketch out a timeline, like a (possibly graphical) summary and add flesh to it.

If you have a story in your mind, but the characters are fuzzy, try making character sheets with background details on them, pecularities, connections to the other characters and so on.

Point is, a book is more complex than a novella or short story, so writing it can be a non-linear, non-chronological process, even if the end result is linear and chronological.

Hi everyone! I have a question for you; How do you start writing something?kao_question.png I have multiple books which I plan to write, but I am having trouble with the beginning of them.kao_lazy.png I haven't planned anything scene by scene before, do you think that would help?Thank you in advance for any answers/suggestions!kao_yoroshiku.pngthanks.png

Start writing kao_fire.png it doesn't matter what you start with, my start was a prompt based daily writing challenge just do it and do a little bit day by day until you find a story you really want to devote yourself to kao_fire.png fanfiction is also a really great place to start because you can hone your writing skills and get feedback from people about what you write (while also enjoying the characters/world in a new way) kao_drink.png

if you keep writing a bit a day (and keep reading, reading really good fiction in lots of different genres really helps too) you'll definitely improve kao_sparkles.png experiment kao_fire.png experiment with ways of writing (first person past, first person present, third person past, etc) different verb tenses in your writing might yeild better results (my best work is all in third person past tense) expand your vocabulary and try to keep things simple kao_drink.png you don't need a big grand story at first, or even well developed characters. Just make it up as you go along when you start until you find the best method that works for you kao_yeah.png

Thank you both so much for the advice! thanks.png

I will do my best to follow your suggestions.

TheFallenHawk. Unfortunately, I doubt that I would be allowed to publish anything yet—fanfiction or not.kao_dead.pngAre there any prompt lists you would suggest?kao_think.png Writing fanfiction is sometimes more difficult for me because I don't want to mess up the story. Basically I don't want to change anything because in good writing everything has a purposekao_what.png. I guess a different point of view could fix that though. kao_sorry.png

むじな. I think my current stage is most like the second paragraph. What do you mean by graphical? Do you mean 'on a graph', 'with graphics (art)', or 'giving a graphic description'?kao_question.png

Thank you again!neko_what.png

If you have YouTube or Insta, there's a channel called Charolyn that has Oc question/oc prompt reels and other stuff like that that I really like, there's tons of other channels for that too if you look.

Personally fanfiction isn't my thing either I used to do it when I was younger but I can't really get myself to be that interested now except for fan comics or joke stuff.

むじな is referring to a storyboard kind of thing which you can find templates for writing ones and stuff, or you can draw it out basically like they said, a timeline. I would recommend writing down your ideas for any particular plot events you can think of now, I almost never write anything I've come up with and I deeply regret it sometimes because I can completely forget certain parts of stories that would have been nice to remember

@RaiX13, if I could give you only one piece of advice (although I can't guarantee that it'll work for you), it would be this: make sure you know where the story's going. Create an outline, or some general structure of the story that has a definite beginning, middle, and end. Without a solid over-arching story (or theme), your book will lack cohesiveness and purpose. You don't have to plan out every single detail of every scene; as long as your story has a definite structured plot, you'll do just fine (I find that writing things out solidifies what I've created and helps me visualize my ideas). When I attempted my first story, I had created a solid beginning that got me through the first 50 chapters, but the plot was all over the place and I had no idea where to take it once the main conflict was established. Careful planning is the backbone of well-written literature kao_guts.png

I would also encourage really getting to know your characters. Try to get inside their heads and imagine how they think, walk, act, talk, and feel. Everyone has a unique way of expressing themselves, and if you really lean into the individuality of your characters, it will make them that much more believable to your audience.

I hope these help! kao_heart.png

Well, @RaiX13 I feel a bit late to the party here but here I go anyway! kao_satisfied.png

everyone gave you advice on how to START a book, and I'll give you advice on when you are ACTIVELY writing the story!

As a girl who is currently 30 chapters into a book she is going to publish (thx to Amazon!) the best thing I can say to you is this (and you've probably heard a lot of this already):

Just start writing.

Worry about the plot and the direction of the story after you establish the characters and who they are as people. But don't forget that people change, characters can too.

Don't worry if the story starts to seem like it's going nowhere, just step back, take a few days, and when the motivation strikes again, write.

And most importantly: This is YOUR story. Let it go where you want it to go. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't good, or needs to change.

Good Raix, and if you need anymore advice or just wanna flesh some ideas out come talk to us!! kao_hug.png

Edit: oops, meant to say Good luck Raix!! Lol, I'm slipping. kao_shiawase.png

@RaiX13 I would recommend just introducing the reader to the world that the characters are set in like the city they live in where they are from and stuff. Or you can start off simple and introduce the main chracter and write a scene where the other main characters interact with the main, main character so that they are introduced!! ( Probably not the most helpful advice out of everyone but still advice!! kao_satisfied.png
