I have figured out how to read the kata/hira for a while and memorized a lot of them like half If I'm correct. But I'm having trouble when I have kana/hira in the sentence I read them out(and try to find other words out) for a full translation but I realize I have a problem: I don't know what the romanji means. Let's say おはようございます (ohayou gozaimasu): or "Good morning" I read the whole thing but I don't know what it means (some of those I haven't memorized I got the sentence from Google) but if this happens what am I supposed to do? I don't understand the meaning of it( I do but it's a example).
Is there a way to learn romanji or something? How can I fix my problem of this and how do I automatically translate it after reading it?
It's all about practice...but there might be a problem with romaji in some areas ( in the web ) and will not be good to read and learn like ā, ī, ū, ē, ō called macron. They resemble long vowels like おばあさん ( mother ) in romaji will be written as obaasan. In romaji obāsan, but the problem is that most people dont know about this and often end up in obasan. There is also one more ō ( ou ) => like こうこう (kōkō ) The major problem I think is the particles. わたしは will be written as watashi wa . Or maybe にほん へ (nihon e ) Which even confuses me, but if you practice u will get the hang of it. Another thing I would like to say is not to keep on relying (if you can) on translators or bots. If it is suitable to you. One major problems is that it DOES NOT show pitch accents : Take bridge ( hashi ) and kami ( paper ). Now in japanese there are various words that mean the same thing. Hashi = bridge, chopsticks kami = paper, god, hair Now the problem is that in hashi => Hashi with ha/shi\ is called bridge and Hashi with /ha\shi is called chopsticks. And kami with ka/mi\ is called hair, also kami with ka/mi\ is also paper 😭😭, kami with /ka\mi is called God. Another problem 😭😭 just like with these words several same words have different kanji so you will not be able to distinguish which kanji is used in the sentence unless the context is understandable. kami word has 神, 紙, 髪 and I think there are more that I dont know. Basically what I m trying to say is it might not be a good idea to learn Romaji. Romaji is not a language to learn, it is just a helping tool.
I don't understand what you mean by "full translation" or "not knowing what the romaji means". Does it mean that if you read おはようございます you don't know what it means until you write it in romaji? Because if that's the case then you need to stop using romaji and get used to the kana as soon as possible. "ohayou gozaimasu" isn't Japanese. おはようございます is Japanese. You need to be able to read Japanese.
If you read a word in hiragana (for example, さかな), and you correctly read it in your head as "sakana", but you don't know what it means, then just go to the dictionary on the top right corner and type さかな, and you'll be able to see what it means.
Romaji is just a way to spell letters with Latin characters. It's not really meaningful. There's a relationship to it, but primarily, as
ansairsaid, this is not Japanese. Kana and kanji are Japanese. So, if you've gone as far as reading off letters like おはようございます or お早うございます, congratulations! You're able to spell words! You can just look up its meaning in a dictionary. Further, there are things like particles and other phrases of grammar-related speech which change the spelling of certain words and might confuse you. That's when you have to learn some points of grammar first.
Eventually, you'll be able to read and write with little issue. You don't have to worry about romaji at all.
