I’ve enjoyed playing the shiritori game as a way to earn experience. Recently, though, the default always puts me into a katakana-only game. I’d like to practice words with hiragana. Did I do something to trigger the default change? Can I change it back?
At the beginning the site only lets you play in beginner games, but after 30 days they move you to the normal games. This is probably what happened. Just scroll down and you'll see a list of all the available shiritori games.
Could you give us a bit more details? There's a default game? I just play a word for any game that's available. You're talking about these right? I tried testing it a bit, but I can't really figure out how the system picks a game to focus on (when you first load the page). Right now I have to manually go to a game I can actually play, since it defaults to a game I've already played a word in. Not a big deal to me personally.
Edit: If you're in beginner games and the only available game is katakana only, that's the only one you can play in. You can manually "graduate" from beginner games and you won't have that problem. People play words very frequently in normal games.

Beginner games don't include katakana-only games. When you click on Shiritori on the menu, there's a game that opens automatically - that's the "default" game OP is referring to, and in my experience it's always the katakana-only games for some reason.
@ansair You might be on to something, I feel like it defaults to katakana-only a lot. Maybe if it's available, that's what you get as the default. I play a lot in katakana-only, so I guess when I don't have it available, it defaults to something else. Who knows.
It does seem to be on top of the list of games (excluding private games), but the behaviour I'm experiencing right doesn't make any sense to me. It opens on a hiragana game I can't play in, even though there's a private game I can play in. Weird.
Now that I look at the list, it's not really always on top, and the game it picks for me isn't the one on top either...
Edit: Now it defaults to the second to last "Anything goes" game I've played a word in, once again ignoring the private game I can actually play in... Oh well, there's no need for me to think about it, since it doesn't really matter
