i actually made a top 16 favorite kanji :
峠 comes out on top! the "mountain up down" is so funny to me, and it looks very aesthetically pleasing too.
Hmm, not sure. Here's a few I like:
Since this thread got revived, I found a word where our popular starlets, the jigsaw puzzle pieces, feature beautifully: 凸凹! Even better, 凸凹コンビ.
For me 凸 is the more interesting of the two. It gets used quite a bit within streaming/gaming culture. For example 凸待ち or using duplicates to limit-break/strengthen a character in gacha games. Shorthand that came from limit-break systems, simplified over time. 限界突破 → 限突 → 限凸 → 凸.
I think it's X凸 = total duplicates burned, but don't quote me on that.
This made realize I need to pay more attention to 突. Maybe I should call it my favorite. I mean, really, cave dog? What’s not to like about that?

Waaaait wait wait, there's a dog and a cave in 突? How did I not...? And then it got morphed into a jigsaw puzzle piece? Oh, I love kanji.
BTW, any recommendations on reference books for kanji etymology? (Oh no. I can already see myself knowing which kanji evolved out of some obscure tradition akin to the fish-slapping dance, while still not being able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese.)
Not really, just Wiktionary. So far, I haven’t been ambitious enough to get myself copies of the primary sources, but that seems like the next step.

To answer your question 旺文社漢字典 第四版 and 漢字源 (you can use them with yomitan too). You can also type 解字 (litteraly explanation of a kanji) on the internet.
As for the kanji, I think I like 気? Because it's very versatile kanji and also tied to asian culture in general
I also like 紅 but just because of 紅葉 (because of the scenery). And also 訳 because of わけ (not sure how to explain why).
hum... nevermind. I don't think I like kanji "right now"
Once I'm done with the jouyou and/or I manage to find more time to work on my conversation skill, I will like them again xD
