The yellow lines on the black one are probably lens flare clear evidence that your kitten has some sort of supernatural, divine aura that makes it extra special and worthy of much cuddles. kao_eating.png

(Also, after the "this one isn't" I'm sensing an unwritten "...but should probably be". The golden, almost subtropical, late-afternoon light makes it even more endearing.)

Hello all! I am an aspiring myrmecologyst living in Utah and would like to share my pet ant colonies - and my dog, of course. kao_joy.png

I have three colonies currently. 2 of these are Tetramorium Immigrans colonies, also known as the common pavement ant. They're the ants you see massive clumps of on the sidewalks around Utah - in fact, they're an adapted, previously invasive species living in most of the U.S.A. These "clumps" or "balls" of ant biomass are actually (in most cases) two colonies at war - now you know! 😁

Here's a picture of my original (and largest) Tetramorium Immigrans colony.

This picture is about 2 months old, they are now moved into a larger setup. See that large, blurry figure at the top of the image? That's the queen ant. She is the mother of all other ants in the colony. Cool, huh?

Now I will show you my Camponotus Modoc (Carpenter ant) queen. this is a very big bug.

More than 1½ centimeters, isn't that crazy??? This is an old picture, she has now laid eggs and they have almost hatched! SO EXCITING!!! kao_heart.png

Ok, now for my dog. Her name is Josie. She is just so, so cute. Here's a picture:

AHHHH I LOVE HER!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Just FYI, if anyone would like to know more, let me know! I love teaching people about formicology.

Wow, @GroovyMAXIMUM , that's so interesting! Ants are fascinating creatures. I'm sure it takes a lot of dedication and attention to look after a colony - I'd be paralysed at the thought that these tiny, powerful beings depend on me in their little controlled environment. (Adrian Tchaikovsky has a book in which someone builds a computer out of ants, if you're interested.)

I've never seen an ant as big as your Camponotus in Europe, though that doesn't mean they don't exist. We do have some ridiculously tiny red ones that bite awfully hard, though.

Question: what's the best way to rescue an ant from a mug of coffee & milk? Is it alright to "shower" it with a drop of clean water after I get it out, or better to let it dry itself off? I often leave my mug in the grass and need to fish out the poor little critters with a paper tissue.

Josie is a bundle of cuteness and that black nose needs to be booped urgently.

To keep this close to Japanese: I didn't know the kanji for (あり) , but look at the components! and – how very fitting, isn't it?

むじな, great question! I would say that rescuing them and leaving them be would probably be the best bet - the ants will clean themselves off. In fact, milk has some essential nutrients that ants really appreciate - salts and calcium, to name a few. And, interestingly enough, that caffeine from your coffee (assuming it isn't decaf) is likely to give said ants a slight boost to their foraging abilities, according to some research I looked at a while back. I'll have to find the name of the paper(s). kao_dead.pngAlso, thanks for the book recommendation! What's it called?

Oh, and im rather curious about what species of ant you are describing, and I'd like to try and identify it - just for funsies. Do you know (roughly) the size of the ants and/or their coloration?
